THE number of people that have succumbed to COVID-19 passed the 2 000 mark over the weekend.
According to the latest COVID-19 statistics provided by the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula the extremely sad milestone was reached on Saturday when the deaths of 28 more people were registered on Saturday. He said that the latest fatalities ascribed to COVID-19 increased the cumulative death toll in Namibia to 2 019.
Eight of the deaths was recorded in the health district of Windhoek, five each in the health districts of Swakopmund and Katima Mulilo, three in the health district of Oshikuku, Two deaths in the health district of Tsumeb, and one death each in the health districts of Okongo, Onandjokwe, Okahao, Eenhana, and Tsandi.
The health minister also announced that 1 284 people out of specimen batch of 3 445 had positive test results. He added that the positivity rate of 37% remains extremely high and a matter of concern.

He said that the Khomas Region registered 317 new cases, the Erongo Region 165, the Oshikoto Region 151, the Kunene Region 122, the Kavango East Region 92, the Otjozondjupa Region 87, the Ohangwena Region 74, the Omusati Region 67, The Zambezi Region 65, the Hardap Region 42, the Karas Region 32, the Oshana Region 29, The Kavango West Region 23 while the Omaheke Region registered 18 new cases.
Dr. Shangula stated that 622 people received certification declaring them recovered from COVID-19 which leaves the country with 26 270 active cases.
“Of that number 570 people were hospitalised while 107 people are currently receiving critical care in the various intensive care units of hospitals across the country,” he said.
According to the statistics, 131 132 people received the first shot of the available vaccines while 30 529 people have been fully vaccinated by Saturday.
