THE Namibian Police Force in the Oshana Region has urged residents to form or join neighbourhood watch groups in order to combat the high number of burglary incidents.
This follows after the residents of Ongwediva complained about the high number cases of housebreaking in the town.
Tuhafeni Shikongo, a resident of Hanover, stated that many of their houses are being broken into by unknown suspects.
“Our houses are being broken into this side. One cannot just step out a bit without finding your house in a mess with shoe prints all over when you return,” he said.
Oshana Community Affairs representative, Warrant Officer Frieda Shikole confirmed that there is an increase in the number of burglaries in Ongwediva, Oshakati, and Ondangwa.
Shikole stated that NamPol has sent out foot patrols in an effort to increase police visibility.
“Most suspects break into the houses to steal electronic equipment, while some are looking for everything portable,” she said.
Shikole than urged house owners not leave their houses unattended or at least leave someone inside when going away for a weekend or a holiday. She said it also helps if residents notify a trusted neighbour about their absence.
