COVID-19 is not fiction

Placido Hilukilwa

THE coronavirus is a hard-hitting reality, yet there are people, who still live in denial, behaving as if the current pandemic was mere fiction.

This was said by an Oshakati-based paramedic who was part of a team that was dispatched to pick up a seriously ill elderly resident of the Oneshila informal settlement on Thursday.

The man, who was showing COVID-19-like symptoms, was carried from his sleeping room by a team of paramedics from the Northern Ambulance Service and was rushed to the Oshakati intermediate hospital.

Another male inhabitant of the same house — who is said to be a recovering COVID-19 patient — watched the operation from a safe distance to avoid mingling with the crowd of curious neighbors who came out of their houses to watch the unfolding drama.

“Of late, we are increasingly being called upon to pick up people who fell ill at home with COVID-19-like symptoms. This is a serious situation we are in,” said the paramedic who preferred to remain anonymous.
