Zuma off to jail

Staff Reporter

FORMER South African President Jacob Zuma has left his Nkandla compound to hand himself over to the South African Police Service to start his 15-month jail sentence.

Zuma left the compound at about 23:15 in his motorcade and according to South African media outlets the former president received a call shortly before with an ultimatum to hand himself over peacefully or be humiliated by an arrest in public.

Shortly before midnight on Wednesday evening the Jacob Zuma Foundation confirmed that he will be handing himself over to the South African correctional authorities.

“Dear South Africans and the World. Please be advised that President Zuma has decided to comply with the incarceration order. He is on his way to hand himself into a Correctional Services Facility in Kwazulu Natal. A full statement will be issued in due course,” the Jacob Zuma Foundation stated on Twitter.

The Constitutional Court last week sentenced Zuma to serve the sentence after he was found to be in contempt of court. He was ordered to hand himself over to the police on Sunday but several interventions by his lawyers with the highest court in the country stayed the final hour until Wednesday at midnight.
