A sad memorial service, the first held without a casket in Namibia, took place in the Parliament Gardens this morning in Windhoek for the late Professor Mburumba Kerina.
Different speakers and children paid tribute to the late Professor Kerina and the indelible role he played in Namibian Society.
The speakers said that he will be remembered as a revolutionary who loved history, an author, and the man who gave the country its name.
Kakuna Kerina said that his father gave his all in every corner of the nation that he loved so deeply and credited him for being an inspiration and who had an impact.
A message that was read on behalf of the Founding Father, Dr. Sam Nujoma where the First President of Namibia paid tribute to the late Professor Kerina and his contributions to the development of the country in difficult times.
Dr. Nujoma said Professor Kerina will be remembered dearly.
Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba also paid tribute to Professor Kerina and his family.
President Pohamba said that Professor Kerina made a monumental contribution to the Republic of Namibia.
“He was the man who named Namibia and the man who carried our petitions to the United Nations. He served the OvaHerero Chief Council diligently and was the progenitor of the genocide recognition,” he said.
Kerina died on 14 June 2021 due to COVID-19 complications.
The funeral of Professor Kerina will take place on Sunday in Okahandja.
The Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, James Uerikua will be the key speaker at the final resting place of the late Professor Kerina.
