NBC workers praying for pay

Staff Reporter

THE majority of Namibia Broadcasting Corporation employees did not receive their salaries for May when payday rolled around at the start of this week.

The national broadcaster’s workers, who had been on strike for most of May, were very surprised when they received only a fraction of their salaries or none at all.

The alleged surprise came after they signed a no-work-no-pay agreement with their employer as one of the conditions of the strike.

The striking workers were also informed that the offer to permanently employ contract workers, was reviewed by the NBC’s board and subsequently set aside.

The decision was taken after people that would have benefitted from the permanent employment offer, missed the deadline to respond.

“It is so unfortunate that management made a U-turn with regard to contract workers. We were not even told that there was a deadline to respond to the offer. It was also very shocking that we didn’t receive our salaries. Some people got zero and others got salaries of amounts like N$ 200,” one of the striking workers said.

The people still on strike will make a final decision whether or not to abandon the disruptive industrial action today.

The decision will be taken after Peter Nevonga, the secretary-general of Namibia Public Workers Union (Napwu), has addressed the striking workers on how they should proceed.
