Death toll rises in Gaza

Staff Reporter

TEN children were among the 42 Palestinians that were reportedly killed during the latest airstrike by Israel in the Gaza strip.

The airstrike came as militants fired rockets at Israel with no end to the fighting in sight.

International media reports stated that the Israeli military accepted responsibility for the civilian casualties which were described as unintentional.

The latest casualties occurred while the Israeli Defence Force targeted a tunnel system used by militants. The tunnels reportedly collapsed causing some of the Palestinian homes to fall down as well.

The latest casualties in the war caused the death toll in Gaza to jump to 188 while ten people in Israel were killed by the seemingly endless barrage of rockets fired from the strip.

In the meantime, the Security Council of the United Nations convened an emergency meeting to discuss the violence.

U.N. Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres told the Security Council that hostilities in Israel and Gaza were utterly appalling and called for an immediate end to the fighting.

He said the United Nations was actively engaging all sides toward an immediate ceasefire and urged the parties involved to allow mediation efforts to succeed.
