NBC workers hands petition to Prime Minister

Marthina Mutanga

EMPLOYEES of the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) today handed over a petition to Prime Minister, Saara Kuugongelwa- Amadhila in which they demand that the government as a shareholder, immediately, and as a matter of urgency review its current subsidy to the national broadcaster.

This, they say will enable them to effectively carry out their mandate to inform, educate, and entertain the Namibian nation.

They also requested that the National Assembly reject the 2021/2022 budget allocation to the NBC, saying it makes a mockery of the institution that provides essential services to the Namibia nation.

The striking employees further stressed that they do not foresee a future with the current management because they cannot be entrusted with the finances of the state-owned enterprise and demanded the immediate removal of the Board of Directors.

“We further request a forensic audit into the financial affairs of the NBC to ensure that history does not repeat itself,” Franlin Thomas, who read the petition on behalf of the striking employees, said.

Lastly, they have urged the Ministries of Information and Communication Technology, Finance, and State-Owned Enterprises to closely monitor the financial administration of the NBC to ensure better accountability.

They demanded that all contract workers be appointed permanently in a step that would mark the end of the contract labour system at the NBC.

Kuugongelwa- Amadhila upon receiving the petition stated that the government will look into their grievances and revert back to the employees at an opportune time.
