THE Ongwediva Town Council has terminated with immediate effect a tender awarded to Neu Olulya Trading CC to upgrade Church Street to bitumen standard after the company did not honour its contractual obligation.
Church Street is approximately 1.6 kilometres long, stretching from Abraham Nyambali Street to Kahumba Kandola Street, and once upgraded it was expected to connect institutions to important services in town.
Town council spokesperson, Jackson Muma said the termination came into effect on the 21st of April.
Muma stated that the project which was awarded in November last year was worth N$6.3 million and was supposed to be completed in eight months but nothing happened.
Muma stated that no significant progress has been made despite numerous communications addressed to the contractor.
“The contractor has also failed on several occasions to attend site meetings which are crucial to track progress,” he said, adding that the delay has compromised the projected completion period and does not conform to standards and values of Ongwediva Town Council and its residents.
Muma stated that the council will restart the bidding process in due course in order to complete the project. He indicated that a new completion deadline will be set, once the contract is awarded.
He assured the residents that the council will continue to act in the best interest of the public through the provision of quality services and at no point will it indent to compromise the set standards.
