Locust outbreak seen as an emergency

Following the recent outbreak of locusts on farms in the area of Grootfontein the Governor, James Unomasa Uerikua held an emergency meeting of the Otjozondjupa Disaster Risk Management Committee to devise ways of dealing with the emergency and to prevent further infestation.

 

According to the Otjozondjupa Chief Agricultural Scientific Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Petrus Thiyemo, the outbreak in the region is currently contained, with only three cases reported so far, and the damage from all three outbreaks has been minimal.

 

Also in attendance was the Otjozondjupa Regional Council Chairperson Marlayn Mbakera, regional and constituency councillors, and representatives from different Government Offices, Ministries, and Agencies.
