A TOTAL of 74 motor vehicle accidents that resulted in the death of 16 people were recorded over the Easter weekend.
The number of road accidents increased with 300% if compared to the previous year.
The Head of Namibian Police’s Public Relations Division, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said in a statement that the increase is ascribed to the fact that last year no movement was allowed under the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Besides the 16 fatalities the incidents also resulted in 122 people sustaining various degrees of injuries.

According to the comparative accident report, the number of accidents increased by 289%, while the number of injured people increased by 352%. Fatalities increased by 300 percent.
According to the report a total number of 64 Courtesy Notifications were issued.
Officials also wrote 67 tickets for illegal transportation where people used seven-seat vehicles to transport people.
Suspension Notifications were issued to 20 drivers because their vehicles were not roadworthy while 85 drivers were arrested for driving while under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
