UPM’s Junius passes on

PIET Junius, one of the last gentlemen of pre-, and post-independence politics in Namibia died at the age of 79.

 

Junius, who served Namibia on the political front since the 1970s, was a minister in the pre-independence transitional government. More recently he became the President of the United People’s Movement.

 

Before he joined the UPM, the late Junius served as the DTA’s Chief Whip in the National Assembly from 1990 to 2003.

 

In 2018 he was elected as the President of the UPM.

 

The late Junius also played a significant role in the re-establishment of Baster Captaincy as a traditional authority for the Baster people of Namibia.

 

Junius’s death occurred on Saturday after a short sickbed.
