Junior council aids schools

THE Ongwediva Junior Council on Friday donated 630 sanitary towels, 550 branded face masks and hand liquid sanitiser bottles to six schools.

The beneficiaries are Hashiyana Combined School, Ekwafo Secondary School, Oupumako Combined School, Kandjengendi Combined School, Joseph Mbangula Primary School and Omusheshe Primary School.

Junior Mayor of Ongwediva, Natasha Ipumbu, said a total N$21 628.25 was spend on the project.

She explained that in the previous year they donated school uniforms, but due to the current pandemic, the team decided to divert away from uniforms and instead give materials to help in the fight against the coronavirus.

“There are sanitary towels that Ongwediva Junior Council is going to distribute to the schools here to help underprivileged girls at those schools. Of course we could not have done it without the help of our sponsors,” she said.

Ipumbu noted that Namibia has been at war with the COVID-19 since last year and that the virus has taken many lives.

She stated that although a cure has not yet been discovered, there is a way to battle the pandemic by following the protocols established against it, such as sanitizing, social distancing and wearing of masks.

Ipumbu further indicated that are many adolescent girls miss lessons due to their monthly cycles as they cannot afford sanitary pads, and this affects their studies.

“These girls are the future, the Namibia of tomorrow. We need to help our future doctors, nurses, pilots, leaders and engineers to attend lessons by donating sanitary towels,” added Ipumbu.

She concluded that a little goes a long way.
