Bittersweet conclusion to Shoprite strike

AN agreement between the Namibian Food and Allied Workers Union (NAFAU) and Shoprite Namibia will see that no permanent worker of Shoprite is paid a monthly wage less than N$2,500.

 

The agreement was announced on Sunday afternoon after weeks of demonstrations nationwide by over a 2,000 workers of Shoprite, Checkers and USave who were demanding salary increases, as well housing and transport allowances.

 

The agreement, signed by both parties, gave striking workers three days to report themselves back to work after being on strike since 23 December 2020.

The signed agreement is as follows:

Year one (1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021)

The following salary and wage increases have been agreed upon by both the parties to all employees in the bargaining unit who have been in the employ of the company from 1 July 2020 and who are still in the employ of the company on the date of signing this agreement as specified hereunder

2.1 Permanent Full Time (FT) Employees will receive a monthly salary increase of NS 250.00 per month, but no Permanent Full Time (FT) Employee will receive a salary not less than N$ 2,500.00 per month.
2.2 Permanent Part Timer (PPT) Employees will receive a wage increase of N$1.28 per hour but no Permanent Part Timer (PPT) Employee will receive a hourly wage of not less than N$12.82 per
hour.

Year two (1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022)

The following salary and wage increases have been agreed upon by both the Parties to all employees in the bargaining unit who has been in the employ of the company from the 1 July 2021 and who are still in the employ of the company on the date of signing this agreement as specified hereunder.

2.3 Permanent Full Time (PFT) Employees will receive a monthly salary increase of N$250.00 per month.
2.4 Permanent Part Timer (PPT) Employees will receive a wage increase of N$1.28 per hour.

Addition to the salary increases, the following will apply:

2.5 Back pay for the period 1 July 2020 to 31 January 2021 will be paid in an off-cycle during the month of February 2021 to all employees who are in the employ of the Company at the date of signing this agreement.

2.6 Late Shift Allowance of N$12.00 for all Employees in the Bargaining Unit that clock out after 20h00 in the evening.
2.7 The Permanent Part Time Employees earning N$9.71 per hour and above will receive a once-off payment of N$1,000.00 in the month of January 2021.
