MINISTER of Labour and Industrial Relations and Employment Creation, Utoni Nujoma, today called a meeting between the Namibian Food and Allied Workers Union (NAFAU) and the Shoprite management, in the hopes of reaching a resolution agreeable to both parties.
The meeting, which is currently ongoing in the Capital, was held under the watchful eye of the Namibian Police while striking workers marched from the parliament gardens to the police headquarter to hand over a petition.
Khomas Regional Commander Commissioner Joseph Shikongo briefly left the meeting between the labour ministry, the union and Shoprite to receive the striking workers’ petition.
In the petition, the workers condemned the shooting with rubber bullets of approximately 13 striking Shoprite employees at Oshakati last Friday.
The petition, read by Tunapu John, is demanding that a public apology be issued by Oshana Regional Commander, Commissioner Rauha Amwele.
COVID-19 social distancing regulations were observed at the peaceful march.
