WEATHER prophets were right on target with their predictions about heavy rain when they warned residents of Windhoek to prepare for flash floods.
Several of the smaller rivers in and around Windhoek flowed strongly and disrupted traffic throughout the city as many motorists had to search for alternative routes to reach their intended destinations.
At the start of the weekend, the City of Windhoek (CoW) warned all o residents to take the necessary precautions to avoid being caught unawares by severe weather that in some instances could have fatal repercussions.
On Sunday the warning was repeated as heavy rains started to fall Sunday.
The unprecedented warning by the CoW follows in the wake of an incident where 79 households in the various informal settlements in Windhoek were displaced by flooding in the capital’s informal settlements last week.
Ever since the warning, emergency services in and around the city have been placed on high alert and the residents should call the 061 211 211 emergency number at the first sign of trouble or if people find themselves in dangerous situations.
The heavy rains and resultant flash floods are expected to continue today.
