Shack fire claims a life

THE 49-year-old Otto Benjamin Goseb, an employee of the Swakopmund Municipality, died horribly when the shack he was sleeping in burned to the ground.

According to the report provided by the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region, the tragic incident occurred at about 00:30 on New Year’s Day at a house on Erf number 3743 in Waterberg Street in the Tulinawa residential area of Swakopmund.

“The Police and Swakopmund Fire Brigade were notified by a community member that a shack behind the main house on the yard was burning. The emergency services responded immediately and managed to extinguish the fire in short order,” the statement reads.

While the firemen worked through the debris of the fire to make sure that the blaze would not flare up again they discovered the remains of Goseb.

The victim was burned beyond recognition and was only identified after his family who spent the night at another house to celebrate the advent of the New Year, were informed.

It was further established that the deceased person was the owner of the main house where the backyard shack was situated.

Apart from the shack in which the victim burned to death, two other shacks in the yard of the house next door were also destroyed.

No other deaths or injuries were reported and the actual cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
