THE third edition of the Okapya Sports Tournament will go on as planned after Namibia Sports Commission has approved the application for hosting the event.
An organiser of the tournament, Sandro Ithana confirmed on Sunday that they will allow 100 people at the venue excluding players.
The tournament is scheduled to run from 24 to 28 December at Eleven Morning Star soccer field near the Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Airport in Ondangwa.
Ithana pointed out that draws for the team playoffs will be conducted on 23 December at the Eleven Morning Star Sports Field.
“The tournament was established with the aim of uniting youth from all walks of life in order to keep them occupied and entertained during the Festive Season,” he said.
Ithana noted that keeping youth busy also means less crime during the holidays.
“Apart from soccer and netball, there will also veteran games for everyone above the age of 34,” he said.
In the youth soccer category, Ithana said that the first runner-up is expected to walk away with a grand prize of N$10 000, a trophy, 18 gold medals, and new soccer kit. The runner-up will get N$5 000 and 18 silver medals, and the team in third place will get N$3 000 and 18 bronze medals.
He indicated that the winner of the netball will scoop, N$3 500, trophy, and 14 gold medals. The second-place winner will get N$ 1 500 and 14 silver medals, while the third-place winner will get N$1 000 and 14 bronze medals
Ithana noted that registration for soccer and netball teams is set at N$ 1 000 and N$ 750 respectively. While the veteran’s teams will register at a cost of N$ 950 with great prizes expected to be won.
