THE 30-year-old Mwenyo Haloloye Nghinanghiteti, who was accused of raping his sister when she was only 15-years-old, was found dead in a holding cell after making his first court appearance on Thursday.
The deceased person, who allegedly raped his sister sometime during 2018, was arrested after he returned home to Aanamalenge recently.
The Omusati Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Titus Shikongo, said the case was opened against the deceased in April this year after the victim confessed to a local pastor.
“During April this year, the 17-year-old victim wanted her baby boy to be baptised properly and while speaking to the pastor at that time she revealed that her brother raped her. The pastor then informed the Namibian Police and the suspect was arrested,” he said.
According to the commissioner, the suspect fled south after the case was opened to evade arrest and only returned home recently before being arrested by the police earlier this week.
Nghinanghiteti allegedly hanged himself with a blue trouser lace on Thursday around 14h17 in the holding cells of the Outapi Magistrate’s Court.
Shikongo stated that the deceased was arrested on Wednesday on a charge of rape and was brought for his first court appearance on Thursday at Outapi Magistrate’s Court.
The deceased person’s body was found hanging with a blue trouser lace around the neck burglar bars inside the Magistrate’s court holding cell.
