THE man who stands accused of raping his five-year-old daughter sporadically over a period of nearly a year, was denied bail when he made his first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The 48-year-old man, whose identity is withheld to protect the rape victim, was arrested at the start of the past weekend.
An investigation into the matter revealed that he has been sexually abusing the child since January this year.
When he appeared before Magistrate Conchita Olivier, the accused person was formally informed about the charges he faces, his rights with regard to legal representation, and his rights to formally apply for bail.
The state prosecutor in the matter informed the court that bail is opposed on the grounds of the seriousness of the crime, the public’s interest in the matter, and the possibility that the accused person might interfere with the investigation and the witnesses.
The accused person informed the court that he intends to bring a formal bail application to court before his next appearance.
