FAMILY members, as well as friends of trial awaiting and sentences inmates will once again be allowed to visit their loved ones inside prison following the lifting of a visiting ban which was put in place during the State of Emergency on account of COVID-19.

This was today announced by Commissioner-General Raphael Hamunyela of the Namibian Correctional Service (NCS).

During a press briefing in the Capital, Hamunyela stated that following the lifting of the COVID-19 State of Emergency, the NCS has also seen the need to ease restrictions on visits to inmate.

“The ban on visits to inmates is lifted at all correctional facilities with immediate effect, with the exception of the Oluno correctional facility, where no visits are permitted,” Hamunyela said.

He added that the COVID-19 pandemic in Namibian correctional facilities has decreased exponentially, except for the Oluno correctional facility which has a total 74 positive cases, while the Hardap Correctional facility is expected to have 25 recoveries this week, which will bring positive cases down to zero at the facility.

All other facilities have zero COVID-19 cases.

Hamunyela further explained that the visiting hours will be allowed with certain restrictive measures.

Visits to trial awaiting inmates will take place from Monday to Wednesday, 09:00 to 15:00 and will be conducted on a first come first serve basis.
