EMPLOYEES of MTC, Namibia’s premier mobile telecommunications service provider, assisted the elderly of Mashare near Rundu with food parcels.
The donation of much needed food and other essential items was done through the MTC Care Initiative. The employees handed over food parcels to 70 elderly people with living with leprosy.
The MTC Care Initiative programme is driven by employees through their initiative and willingness to volunteer.
The donation to the elderly people was funded by the employees, who out of the goodness of their hearts came together and contributed to the donation from their personal funds. They were also responsible for identifying vulnerable people that needs assistance in the wider community.
MTC’s spokesperson, Fikameni Mathias, said every month employees contribute as much as they can for the benefit of the less fortunate members of society.
“As a committee we decided to take our assistance to people of Mashare village, who suffers from leprosy,” he said.
Mashare is home to the biggest community of leprosy patients in Namibia, who live together voluntarily due to their shared experience of stigma and isolation.
The Mashare settlement was, until the early 1980s, the site of a leprosarium.
