A TOTAL of ninety-three independent candidates and associates will participate in this year’s Regional Council and Local Authority Elections.
Chief Electoral Officer, Theo Mujoro, said the final voters’ register will be gazetted on 6 November 2020, special voting will be conducted on 23 November 2020, while the voting day is slated for 25 November 2020.
Mujoro further noted that ECN successfully concluded the nomination process for the submission of candidates for this year’s Regional Council and Local Authority elections, which took place from 29 September to 16 October 2020.
The ECN has received nominations for all 121 Constituencies and 57 Local Authority areas, while sole nominations for four constituencies were recorded.
In all four cases, the candidates were declared duly elected by the respective Returning Officers in accordance with Section 82 (2) of the Electoral Act, Act No. 5 of 2014.
Eighteen political parties and 13 associations will contest the various Local Authorities.
Further details concerning the local authority election nominations will be provided at a later stage as the verification process is still ongoing.
He lastly noted that other activities on the 2020 Electoral Calendar will entail the design and production of sample ballot papers, training of polling officials, determination of polling stations, transport logistics, voter education, observer accreditation, and stakeholder’s consultation, amongst others.
