RESIDENTS of Namibia that would like to cast their vote in the Regional Council and Local Authority Elections in November and who does not have a voter’s card must register as voters.
Supplementary voter’s registration will open in all major centres country-wide on Monday and will end on 15 September 2020.
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has deployed registration teams to all major towns in Namibia and the institution said it is ready for the process.
The ECN’s Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer, Theo Mujoro says besides all the normal preparations special care will be taken to ensure the safety with regard to COVID-19 of prospective voters and officials involved in the process.
“This is the first time in our history as a nation that national elections are being held during a public health crisis. For this reason, the ECN has developed a document titled: The ECN’s COVID-19 Mitigation Strategy to mitigate the potential impact of COVID-19 on the forthcoming elections,” Mujoro said.
According to Mujoro conducting elections involves mobilization of the entire country, and this often involves the congregation of large numbers of people during the training of election officials, voter education sessions, voter registration, and the actual polling process.
“The ECN thus commits to ensuring the safe and secure conduct of elections, with regard to the health of the participants at all the different phases of the electoral process,” he said.
The ECN called on all eligible voters that have either lost their voter cards, moved to a new constituency, or whose details have changed i.e. surname or who have turned 18 years in the intervening period to go out and register to vote for the 2020 Regional Council and Local Authority Elections.
“We would also like to encourage all eligible voters who are residents in Local Authorities whose cards are written “LA not applicable”, and who meet the requirements, to go and register for Local Authority elections,” Mujoro concluded.
