THE COVID-19 related death of Kuku Sofia Naapopye Asino, the sister of Founding President Sam Nujoma, has driven the harsh reality of the pandemic home for many Namibians.

In a message of condolence, President Hage Geingob expressed his sadness and extended his heartfelt condolences to the Nujoma and Asino families.

“I have learned with sadness about the passing of Kuku Sofia Asino. I called the Founding President to convey my sincere condolences to the bereaved Nujoma and Asino families. Kuku Sofia endured harassment from the South African Apartheid occupying regime and remained steadfast, continuing with her work as a teacher and matriarch in her family and beyond. During this difficult period of grief, I wish the family strength. May the soul of Kuku Sofia Asino Rest in Eternal Peace,” Dr. Geingob said.

Kuku Sofia Asino passed away on Friday at the age of 83 while admitted to a Windhoek hospital for a surgical procedure on her leg.
