THE B1 Road north became heavily congested with traffic as thousands of people escaped the hard lockdown measures that will apply to Windhoek for the next 16 days.

New checkpoints have already been erected on the outer perimeters of the Local Authority Areas of Windhoek, Okahandja and Rehoboth to keep people from escaping the special dispensation under the State of Emergency as announced by the Namibian Government earlier on Wednesday.

Hundreds of vehicles loaded with passengers were seen heading north.

The hard lockdown means that people will be forced to apply for special permits to be able to travel outside the three municipal districts.
