Fire destroys shop in Henties Bay

DRAMA ensued in Henties Bay when residents discovered that a fire broke out in a small shopping complex in the centre of town on Sunday afternoon.

Volunteer firefighters assisted by members of the public managed to extinguish a fire that destroyed the building in which PEP and two other businesses are accommodated.

The proximity to of the shopping complex to houses was cause of great concern for the volunteer Fire Brigade of the holiday town. The assistance of the Swakopmund Fire Brigade was requested to help prevent the blaze from spreading to other buildings in the vicinity of the shops. Due to the distance between the two coastal towns assistance could not be rendered.

In the meantime, bystanders attempted to save as much of the property inside two shops adjacent to PEP as the local fire brigade tackled the blaze with the equipment they had.

The fire was extinguished after a hard battle and no injuries or death was reported.

The fire did not cause any damage to houses in close proximity to the small shopping complex.

It is believed that the fire started as a result of an electrical short circuit but the actual cause of the fire will be determined by a thorough investigation.
