A BACKYARD poultry farmer at Endola in the Ohangwena Region suffered significant losses when most of his chickens were stolen by unknown suspects during the early morning hours of Sunday.
The thieves gained access to the chicken coup by cutting the fence and then stole 68 of the 100 chickens.
A case of theft was registered at the Omungwelume police station.
The 65-year-old retired teacher, Teopolina Shatilwe, said that she started her backyard poultry farming with only eight chickens in 2015.
“I feel really bad. We are trying to make ends meet but suddenly the little we have gets stolen,” she said, adding that her heart is broken and sees no reason to continue farming.
She also narrated how on Monday she initially tried to register a criminal case at Oshakati, which is located approximately 16 km from Endola, but police officers could not help her.
She eventually travelled more than 40 kilometres to Omungwelume where she registered a case of chicken theft.
