THREE students and a hospital worker were registered as Namibia’s newest cases that tested positive for COVID-19.
The four new cases of infection with the deadly coronavirus brought the total number of positive cases registered in the country since March up to 29.
Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, the Minister of Health and Social Services at Saturday’s information session at the National COVID-19 Communication Centre said the 26th confirmed case of COVID-19 is a 44-year-old man that was seen by a private doctor on the 2nd June. The patient displayed a sore throat, a runny nose and body aches.
Dr. Shangula added that case number 26 works at a private hospital in Walvis Bay and does not have any travel history. He added that case number 26 did not come into contact with case number 22, and as such, investigations need to be carried out to find out the source of possible transmission.
Dr. Shangula added that the other three new confirmed cases are all Namibian students who were studying in South Africa and returned on the 29 of May on a humanitarian flight.
Case no. 27 is a 23-year-old man who came back from South Africa on the 29th of May. He does not have any symptoms and was tested positive whilst in quarantine.
Case number 28 is a 21-year-old man who also tested positive whilst in quarantine. Case number 29 is also a 21-year-old man. The patient experienced a loss of smell and taste senses and tested positive after a routine test while in quarantine.
Dr. Shangula stated that all the students who returned from South Africa are friends and came back on the same day and was thus quarantined together upon their entry into the country on the 29th of May.
To date Namibia reported 16 recoveries, 13 active cases and zero COVID-19 related deaths.
