DRAMA ensued on the beach in Henties Bay as bystanders and emergency personnel launched a rescue operation to find a child that went missing in the sea just off the central beach.
According to Brian Low of Lifelink Emergency Rescue Services the child, aged between eight and ten, is believed to have drowned after he went into the surf with other children. When the children cameout of the water they started searching for their friend but when they could not find him they immediately called for help from other people on the beach.
Low said LifeLink crews responded to an emergency call from the beach of the holiday town earlier on Sunday afternoon. He said it was reported to them that the child had drowned.
“The missing child is estimated to be between 8 and 10 years old and was with a group of other children who went swimming at the beach without any adult supervision.”
He said LifeLink emergency workers assisted by the Namibian Police and members of the Erongo Community Services carried out extensive searches, but the young victim’s body has not been recovered yet.
The Henties Bay Emergency Services requested members of the public to be on the lookout and report anything to the emergency control centre by dialing 999 on their phones.
Low said that the search for the young victim’s body will continue.
