A TOYOTA bakkie stolen from the parking area of the Oshakati police station in the broad day light was recovered hours later after the speeding thief hit a drainage canal near the aerodrome after he lost control of the vehicle on the outskirts of the town.
The unknown thief fled the scene on foot.
“The suspect is known to the investigators. We are following his tracks and he can be arrested any time,” said police spokesperson Thomas Aiyambo.
He said that the stolen and now recovered white Toyota pick-up (N 16154 SH) belongs to a police officer who was on duty at the police station when a daring thief stole the vehicle at around 11:00 on Thursday.
Police precincts were traditionally considered the safest areas, but this is the case no more.
In a recent incident, burglars broke into the Katutura police station in Windhoek and stole four computers.
