Tragedy strikes at the Mole in Swakopmund

DRAMA ensued on the Mole in Swakopmund after the body of a South African man was discovered floating in the shallow water near the shore of the popular public beach earlier on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, confirmed the death of the young man and said that at this stage it suspected the victim drowned.

“However, a post mortem examination will have to determine the actual cause of death because of the strange circumstances surrounding the incident.”

According to a member of the emergency services, who attended the scene of the tragedy, the incident occurred during a volley ball tournament that was held on Saturday. He said that the entire drama played out in front of a large crowd of people that attended the volley ball tournament.

“The sea was very calm and almost no waves broke on the beach at the time of the incident. Some of the people on the scene of the tragedy said that the man was seen wading into the small waves and a while later his body was discovered floating in the shallow water near the shoreline.”

One of the bystanders dragged the man onto the beach and a medical student attempted to resuscitate him by doing an emergency procedure consisting of mouth-to-mouth respiration and chest compressions, known as cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR.

Members of the emergency services arrived shortly after and the paramedics attached a defibrillator to the victim’s body in order to resuscitate the young man. Their frantic efforts could however not revive the victim and he was declared dead on the scene.

According to Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu the name of the victim, who is in his early 20’s and works in the construction industry, will only be made public once his next of kin in South Africa is officially notified of his tragic demise.
