‘Sick’ suspect delays trial

A SWAKOPMUND man who initially admitted to killing his employer at his home before robbing him, will have to wait until mid-November to go on trial.

Unaaro Mbemukenga informed the court that he could not proceed with the trial that was scheduled for today due to the “excruciating pain” he incurred because of the gunshot wound he sustained during arrest.

He was arrested in August 2017, two days after fleeing from the scene in Outjo. The police fired at him and injured his leg in the process while he was attempting to flee.

He only recently had his crutches removed.

The 27-year-old Mbemukenga has since made a U-turn on his confession, denying that he killed Manfred Hartmann, 78, whom he worked for as a gardener.

“We were ready to proceed with the trial until my client informed me that his leg was in pain. He therefore needs urgent medical treatment,” his lawyer, Mbanga Siyomundji, said.

Mbemukenga will return to court on 25 November.

Meanwhile, the former bus driver suspected to have killed his ex-girlfriend before dumping her body along a highway in Windhoek will plead to the murder on Wednesday. Victor Elia allegedly killed Iyaloo Hainghumbi in 2017 after she told him that she wanted to end the relationship.

Acting Judge Eileen Rakow will preside over the matter.
