AUSTRALIA have returned to the top of Pool D with a comfortable 45 – 10 victory over Uruguay, and all-but sealed their progress to the quarter-final of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
The 19-year-old winger Jordan Petaia lit up the match by scoring a try and setting up another on his test debut as he inspired Australia to score five more tries. It took the youngster just 24 minutes to make his mark.
An early run of high-tackle offences, and a dogged effort by Uruguay, were not enough to stop Australia from winning the match in their bid to make the quarter-finals ahead of their final pool fixture against Georgia.
First-half sin-bins for Adam Coleman and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto contributed to another sloppy start before Australia hit their straps in Oita.
Dane Haylett-Petty and Tevita Kuridrani also crossed in the first half and Kuridrani added his second after the break to make sure Australia earned a bonus point.
Will Genia and James Slipper – who scored his first international try in his 94th Test for Australia – also touched down and Haylett-Petty crossed for his second of the match, before Manuel Diana scored a consolation try for Uruguay.
