THE man who on Sunday murdered his girlfriend with an axe before setting her shack on fire with her body inside, this morning appeared before court in absentia.
The 33-year-old Simon Hamana Sheefeni’s docket was called before Magistrate Johannes Shuuveni today, with charges ranging from murder to arson and defeating the course of justice.
The appearance was done in absentia because as per the law, an accused person has to appear in court within 48 hours after an arrest.
The presiding officer denied bail and the accused was remanded in custody.
The matter was postponed to 30 January 2020 to allow for further police investigations, but it is likely that Sheefeni will make an appearance before the set date once he has been medically cleared.
It appears Sheefeni was injured in the process of setting the shack on fire and is still receiving treatment under heavy police guard.
He killed his girlfriend, 38-year-old Katrina Kasita, following an argument on Sunday early morning and fled from the crime scene.
Sheefeni was arrested on Monday night after he mysteriously emerged from the mountains in the Northern industry area and approached workers at a service station in the area for water as he was dehydrated.
Staff members notified the police and Sheefeni was immediately arrested.
