NAMIBIANS will join roughly 17 million people from 158 countries across the globe when they participate in the National Clean Up Day later today
When the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta launched the second National Clean Up campaign for Namibia during April this year he said the event has been moved to 21 September to bring Namibia in line with the commemoration of World Clean Up Day, which originated in Estonia in 2008 and is now held annually.
The year’s clean up event was planned with a two-pronged approach. One part of the plan is to clean up and the second part is the launch of a sustained awareness and information campaign to change the behaviour and mindset of people with regards to the maintenance of their immediate environment.
During the launch the minister urged all respective governors and regional councils to again mobilize the necessary preparatory structures at the regional level to plan and take forward this campaign.
Shifeta said the youth is urged to participate in their numbers because they are the future leaders of the land and inheritors of the environment.
Members of the public and all sectors of our country are encouraged to take part in this activity which aimed at insuring that the country is free of waste pollution.
Besides cleaning up their immediate surrounding Namibians are also urged to dispose waste in manner that does not pollute the environment.
In this regard several towns have been getting ready with the help of local authorities to clean up.
Ondangwa started with its campaign a week ago to get a head start above the rest of the country’s towns and to maintain their status as cleanest town in the country.
In the same vein the Walvis Bay Twon Council held its regular Team Up to Clean Up events earlier this year to get ready for the National campaign that is set to start in a few hours.
