Namibians in South Africa cautioned to be safe

Aili Iilonga

NAMIBIA’S High Commissioner to South Africa, Veiccoh Nghiwete, has cautioned Namibian citizens living in the Gauteng province of the neighbouring country to remain vigilant and to stay clear of visiting hotspots amidst the province’s ongoing riots that have seen South Africans increasing xenophobic attacks on foreigners.
Nghiwete‘s appeal was prompted by reports from South Africa that foreigners are being burned alive in a string of xenophobic attacks.
”In light of the current violent unrests, the High Commission would like to strongly request all Namibians in the Gauteng province to remain vigilant at all times and to avoid all hotspots around Gauteng until the situation is calm. Namibian nationals are advised not to visit the affected areas,” he said.

He also urged Namibians living in the area to report any incidents involving their compatriots to the Namibian High Commission in Pretoria or the Namibian Consulate in Cape Town.
The latest reports form South African indicate that the latest deadly xenophobic attacks that started over the weekend have resulted in the death of five people – three of them South African nationals.
Many of the shops owned by foreigners and immigrants were looted, while foreigners were attacked by mobs in Gauteng.
Nigerian news outlets are also reporting that Nigerians in Lagos in retaliation have also started looting and burning retail stores owned by South Africans, amongst them Shoprite.
So far, no fatalities have been reported at the violent clashes in the west African country.
The violence in South Africa has forced other Africans to cancel their planned trips to the country in protest, amongst them Zambia’s national football team that was expected to travel to South Africa and play Bafana Bafana in a friendly this weekend, as well as Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage who was expected to perform at the upcoming DSTV Delicious Festival.
