MINISTER of Finance Calle Schlettwein, said the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) embrace modern information technologies to automate tax administration business processes.
Schlettwein made the remarks in the speech read on his behalf, during the Tax Talk held in Ongwediva on Thursday, saying that Tax revenue remains one of the major source of income, hence effective tax collection system cannot be over emphasized
According to Schlettwein, ITAS is an innovative initiative leveraging on new technology to replace the legacy system thereby enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in tax administration.
“Although the system went live at the beginning of this year, we believe that it is important to continue to educate and engage the people regarding ITAS. We must seize every opportunity offered in order to understand the system,” he said, adding that ITAS will transcend as part of the economic advancement agenda as outlined in the Harambe Prosperity Plan.
To date a total of 103 199 taxpayers out of 794 165 taxpayer’s population are registered as portal users. Where Windhoek has a high population of 416 253 taxpayers with a total of 57 998 registered, followed by Oshakati with a population of 107 742 taxpayers where 11 559 has registered.
Schlettwein urged people to embrace the use of the system and promote it in their respective area of operation for the mutual benefit of the Receiver of Revenue and general economic growth of the country.
Speaking at the same event, Commissioner for Inland Revenue Department, Justus Mwafongwe, said that ITAS improve operational efficiency and effectiveness in Tax Administration, at the same time it caters for the effective execution of tax administration functions and offers online self-service, 24-hour accessibility and reduced service queues.
ITAS went live on the 17 January 2019.
