Namibia to be lifted from the burden of blindness

Marthina Mutanga
THE elderly in especially rural Namibia are suffering from eye-related illnesses and need their eyesight restored.
Ophthalmologist Dr Helena Ndume and five other eye doctors from Namibia and the United States of America wil take part in an initiative to restore eyesight to people.
Well known for her charitable work amongst sufferers of eye-related illnesses in Namibia, Ndume and her team have been restoring sight to hundreds of patients at the Engela District Hospital.
Ndume said they have started with the initiative in June and have been going to several places including Rundu, Oshakati, Engela and Oshakati.
The government has offered buses to transport patients to the hospital from their villages.
“My life has changed when I started helping restore people’s visions in this country and I want to encourage the youth of Namibia to try and pursue to studies in ophthalmology,” said Ndume.
She further noted that when she was in exile they were encouraged to study and today she thanks Swapo-led government for helping her peruse her professional dreams as her parents could not afford her studies.
“When I started my awareness in 1997, I observed that a lot of patients would bring other people along to get treatment for their blindness. This inspired me and made me realise that I have a gift and started creating awareness,” Ndume said.
