Mikka Shonena was on Saturday crowned as World Boxing Organisation’s (WBO) Africa Welterweight title after beat Youli Dong on points in an international welterweight fight.
Shonena’s fight which was the main bout of the boxing tournament staged by the MTC Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region.
The Namibian boxer and his opponent from China started the fight like a house on fire as they exchanged punches from the get-go. Dong brought Shonena down in the first round, but he beat the count and continued with the fight.
Shonena, who won on points after 12 rounds of the full match, told Informanté that the match was not easy as his opponent was fit and ready for the game.
“It was never an easy match. I am very happy that I have won against one of the fighters,” said Shonena, adding that his ranking will also go up and that he is aiming for a world title.
Harry Simon Junior, beat Phillip Musariri of Zimbabwe in the second round of their eight fight, while Edison Nghipondokwa beat his opponent Chikondi Makawa of Malawi on points after a full six rounds.
Paulinus Paulus knocked Roy Yudah of Malawi out in the first round in their middleweight fight after boxing for just 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
After the fight Paulus said that he was ready for the next challenge.
