THE 21-year-old Herman Shiimi, a well known criminal from Kuisebmond in Walvis Bay, was wounded in the abdomen while fleeing from joint crime prevention patrol of the Namibian Police and the Namibian Defence Force.
According to the incident report provided by Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, the shooting occurred early on Saturday morning after Shiimi and another suspect were seen by the officers and soldiers during the execution of the Second Phase of Operation Kalahari Desert grabbing the wallet of another man.
“It is alleged that at about 02:30 on Saturday whilst the members of Nampol and NDF were patrolling in the vicinity of Susi Bar and JB Sport Betting Bar in Mica Street, Kuisebmond, they saw two suspects grabbing another man by his arms and robbing him of his wallet before fleeing the scene of their crime.”
According to the incident report the Police and NDF members chased the suspects. One NDF member fired three warning shots from his service pistol but the suspects kept on running.
The soldier then fired a fourth shot which struck Shiimi in the back. The bullet went right through his body and the suspect fell to the ground. He was arrested on the spot.
Only the wallet was found in the possession of the suspect. The two suspects managed to remove the N$300 in cash while they fled from the joint crime fighting patrol. The second suspect still managed to evade capture despite being commanded to stand and the warning shots being fired.
Shiimi was taken to Walvis Bay State Hospital for medical treatment but was later transferred to the Katutura State Hospital in Windhoek where he is currently in a serious but stable condition.
The soldier’s service pistol was confiscated and two cases were registered at the Kuisebmond Police Station.
Pineas Xoagub registered a case of robbery against Shiimi and his fellow suspect and an attempted murder case was registered against the soldier.
According to Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu neither the second suspect nor the member of the NDF were arrested.
He said that once the investigation into the shooting incident is completed the docket will be forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s office for a final prosecution decision.
