THE Biblical saying that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil” was demonstrated in practice in Oshakati recently when unknown thieves stole the church bell of the local parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN).
According to the police, it is not yet clear when exactly the bell with an estimated value of between N$70 000 an N$120 000, was stolen.
“The bell was last used on 21 July, but the theft was only discovered during a funeral service five days later,” said Oshana police spokesperson Frieda Shikole.
Funeral services are traditionally accompanied by the tolling of a church bell.
According to Shikole it was at the exact moment of tolling the bell as the coffin was leaving the church that the bell-ringer pulled the ropes but no sound was made. The heavy and expensive bell was gone. The church’s teaching “you shall not steal” has fallen on deaf ears.
A case of theft was registered with the police at Oshakati but the sacred object was not yet found and no suspect arrested.
