Self-confessed murderer remanded in custody

THE 27-year-old Paulus Nghipulenga accused of murdering his girlfriend, who was a student at the Hifikepunye Pohamba Campus of the University of Namibia in Ongwediva, made his third court appearance in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Monday, on charges of murder and gender-based violence.

Nghipulenga handed himself over to the police after he stabbed 23-year-old Gideon Hamuteta to death in February.
It is alleged that the accused travelled from Windhoek to visit the deceased at the house located opposite the campus, where she resided and which she looked after for an aunt who is lives in Swakopmund.
The deceased was found dead with five stab wounds on her body.
The suspect later handed himself over to the Namibian Police officers that were on duty at the Ongwediva roadblock, after he failed in an attempt to end his own life.
State Prosecutor Mpule Siyamunji opposed the granting of bail on the grounds of the high public interest the murder of the young education student generated and because of the seriousness of the matter.
The prosecutor also informed the Court that detectives are still awaiting results from a forensic analysis on the accused person’s cellular phone.
Before remanding Nghipulenga in custody until his next court appearance, Magistrate Toini Shilongo postponed the matter to 12 September, to allow Nghipulenga to apply for legal aid and for police investigations to be finalized.
