THE Namibian police have dismissed widespread reports that the criminals who staged a dramatic armed robbery at Oshakati earlier today have been arrested and their getaway vehicle impounded.
“No, we have not yet arrested any suspect,” said Deputy Commissioner Hilya Haipumbu, the regional crime investigations coordinator.
She added that the intense search for the criminals is still ongoing.
An unknown number of robbers targeted a Cash Loan outlet near the main branch of the First National Bank at Oshakati and got away with a huge amount of cash – said to be close to N$100 000 – as well as clients’ bank cards and their respective PINs.
The robbery appears to have been perfectly timed to coincide with the payday of many of cash loan customers.
The cash loans withdraw money from their clients’ accounts, starting at midnight, before handing the bank cards to their rightful owners who turn up to claim them as soon as the loan amount is withdrawn.
