South Africa pulled off an unbelievable feat of courage when the beat the hosts of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt, with one goal to nil in the knock-out round-of-16.
Mohamed Salah’s Egypt suffered a shock exit from this year’s championship.
The winning goal was scored by Thembinkosi Lorch in the 85th minute of the second half. Bafana Bafana clung to the lead for dear life and when the final whistle blew the Pharaohs could not believe that they were knocked out of the tournament.
The Egyptian team came to the match loaded with the likes of Salah and other high profile European players.
Bafana Bafana will now face the Super Eagles in the quarterfinals.
Earlier in the day the Super Eagles edged defending champions Cameroon out of the competition.
Salah was devastated to have failed to win the AFCON on home soil but his loss, and Egypt’s loss, could be Liverpool’s gain as they should get him back early, which is a bonus especially as Sadio Mane is still competing in the tournament and he could miss game time with the Reds if Senegal defeat Benin, as expected, on July 10th.
