Shilongo appears in court on multiple charges

ALINA Shilongo, the 55-year-old driver accused of having caused a chain of accidents in which two people died, five others seriously injured and four vehicles damaged in Ongwediva earlier this month, has appeared in the Oshakati magistrate’s court on multiple criminal charges on Friday.
She was remanded in custody but returned to court on Monday with a formal bail application. Shilongo was successful with her application and the presiding magistrate set bail at N$5 000. The accused person was set free later on Monday after paying the bail amount.
Shilongo also sustained injuries during the series of crashes and was admitted to hospital from where she was discharged last Wednesday. The police took her into custody on Thursday.
Shilongo faces several criminal charges including culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, defeating the course of justice and failing to stop and ascertain damages and injuries after a motor vehicle accident.
It is reported that Shilongo was driving a Toyota pick-up down the Mandume Ndemufayo Street when she initially bumped a Toyota Corolla but failed to stop and eventually bumped yet another vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf with four occupants.
An Amarok standing nearby was also hit and seriously damaged.
A total of seven people were injured. Two of them died upon arriving at the hospital.
The case was postponed to 8 July for further police investigation.
