HELALIA Johannes, a favourite in long distance running, once again didn’t disappoint as she not only won the Spar 10km challenge in Port Elizabeth, but did so at a personal best timing of 31 minutes and 50 seconds.
The event took place over the weekend in South African was organised by Nedbank.
Breaking away at the 7km mark, the 38-year-old Johannes piled on the pressure in the stretch.
Johannes beat last year’s winner, Kesa Molotsane, who came third, while 19-year-old Ethiopian track runner, Tadu Teshome, scooped second place with a personal best of 32 minutes and 38 seconds.
After the race, Johannes said that the weather was perfect for her in winning the race.
“I enjoyed the race, but I was not expecting to win in this fashion,” said Johannes, whose time was also the new Namibian record for the distance.
“There was very good competition and everyone is fit, but I just went out there and ran my best, so I am happy with the outcome,” she said.
Johannes, who won the Two Oceans half-marathon last month, has now taken the first step towards the Grand Prix title, which continues with the next event in Cape Town on 26 May.
