Tigers FC became the first football club to progress through to the Standard Bank Top 8 Semi Finals after a late 80th minute goal from Llewelyn Stanley knocked out UNAM at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.
Despite the fans not turning up in huge numbers for the first match encounter, it did not stop both teams from going out and vie for the top prize money of N$500 000.
The game which was the first quarter final match saw a youthful UNAM team creating clear cut chances of which goal machine Tara Katupose failed to convert any of his five chances in front of the goal post.
UNAM had an offside goal ruled out in the 60th minute of the game after Kambanda Edmund fired in a bouncing header.
A seemingly disappointed UNAM Head Coach Woody Jacobs, said that despite his teams’ effort to clear chances, they failed to convert them into goal which is what happens in football.
“If you do not score then you do not win and this is what happens in football. The team did well, we manage to create chances but we failed to convert them,” he said.
Tigers’ Mervin Mbakera applauded his team to sticking it out against a fierce UNAM team and getting the job done.
“This game was about taking your chance and putting through that first goal. We were the first team to take our chance and we got the job done,” he said.
As Tigers set to await their next opponent in the semifinal stage, three other teams will seek to do the same as Mighty Gunners clash it out against Tura Magic tonight, Black Africa against Eleven Arrows and African Stars against Orlando Pirates all playing tomorrow.
