PEOPLE who reported a passed out drunken driver on the road between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja to traffic police were left in utter confusion when the officer on duty requested them to wake the culprit up to tell him to keep on driving towards Okahandja and to report himself to the police station.
One of the people who witnessed the entire incident said they were returning to Windhoek late on Friday afternoon when they noticed the driver of an older model blue Volkswagen Golf overtaking other vehicles in a dangerous manner and also driving erratically.
“At one stage the driver of the Golf almost caused a head-on collision while overtaking one of the cars in front of us. Despite the close shave the driver kept on speeding towards Okahandja while the car was continuously swerving on the B1 Road.”
The witness said the car eventually disappeared from their view but they encountered it again while it was parked right next to the highway about a 115 kilometres away from Okahandja.
“When we stopped at the scene the driver was unconscious and the car’s engine was still running. We discovered a passenger also passed out next to the driver. Both men had open bottles of beer tucked between their upper thighs. We also found an unopened five litre bottle of wine on the backseat of the car.”
The person said they used a phone to report the incident to the Okahandja Traffic Police where a “rather unhelpful” police officer answered the phone.
“The officer told us she wrote down our report and then asked us to wake up the drunken duo and asked to tell them to keep on driving to Okahandja to hand themselves over to the traffic officers at the police station. After us telling the police officer how outrageous her suggestion was, she finally told us she will dispatch someone to go and assess the situation.”
The witness said they still do not know whether help was sent out.
