STAFF at the Opuwo district hospital have now resorted to collecting firewood and making fire as a means of disposing hospital waste.

This, according to insiders has been going on since September last year, after the hospital’s only incinerator broke.

According to a source, the hospital’s theatre waste consisting of needles, blood and pus-soaked bandages, syringes, used testing kits and other waste is burned in a 2meter ditch.

“This is such a frustrating situation. We are at risk of getting snake bites so it is not safe at all that we have to go into the woods to collect firewood. We have been requesting for a machine since last year but we are told the ministry has no money.

This is weird because they have money for staff identification cards. They need to set their priorities right,” He said. The Hospital’s Acting Director Asteria Evard confirmed the situation at the hospital, although she could not comment further.

Ministry of Health Spokesperson, Manga Libita, said that a total N$56 665 will be used to repair the machine’s broken door chamber.

“Authorisation to repair the machine was approved and the contractor will start with repair anytime,” Manga said.
